Of Rioters & Royals book one in the Swift Shadow series by M.L. Greye. This first installment is a fantasy heavy on the romance. Which for me is something I love, I love a good romance and this is a good one. We have Emry who is a royal and Declan who is a rioter. There is obviously some history that helps speed up on romance in my opinion without feeling too instalove.
When you start reading, there is an extensive backstory that is helpful for the reader. At first I wasn’t too into it, I just wanted to get into the story, but in the end I’m glad it’s there. Having the backstory cuts down a lot of the questions that may come up.
There is a lot that I love about this story, one being Emry she is a pretty kickass character that I feel could compete with the heavy hitters in YA at the moment. She is good at a lot of things, which for some may be annoying, but I didn’t feel like it was constantly thrown in your face or in the face of other characters. I love good action scenes and ORR has some pretty good ones. They felt a little rushed though, I felt like I jumped around in them. I would have like them to have a little more breathing room and they would have been some of my all time faves. The parts that felt full, though were really good and I was totally into them.
I really enjoyed the world. I felt like Greye really took the time thinking about the world. The different meaning for each eye color is clear, every character had different abilities and each was strong in their abilities. I liked not having to struggle through the characters learning their abilities.
One of my biggest pet peeves is when a couple is uneven in strength and mind. I like my couples to be on the same level. The fact the Emry is a Silver and has loads of abilities that make her very strong and hard for others to compare, can be a problem. Luckily though Declan is just as strong and there is none like him. He is a Teal that deals with speed and he is the fastest Teal there has ever been. So he can keep up with Emry and he isn’t annoying, he lets her be herself and a solid partner for her. Their interactions are super cute and lovely.
The only thing I will say about the story is that there were times where I felt like a little too much time was dragged out and spent a little too much time in descriptions. I found myself skipping some of the lengthier descriptions because I just wanted to get into the action. This though didn’t hinder me from getting a clear picture of what was going on, I just wanted to get to the good stuff. I also wanted a little more of the side character, I’m hoping since there is a second installment coming that I get more of the side characters. I can tell that there is potential for them to steal my heart, I’m looking at Trez, Fiona and Rand.
Overall I gave this story a 4.5 out of 5, by the end I instantly wanted the second one and I look forward to it. If you’re looking for a new fantasy to sink your teeth into, I totally recommend Of Rioters & Royals, this is one that I feel really can compare to the heavy hitters in YA.
