2018 was a big audiobook year for me, I officially joined Audible and regret nothing. Audiobooks have saved my commute to and from work. They also have totally helped me keep on track of reading goals.
I like to listen to a range of audiobooks, anywhere from nonfiction to fantasy. Right now I’m currently listening to A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir. It is narrated by Katharine McEwan, Fiona Hardingham and Steve West. This trio could not be more perfect for this book. I’ve learned that narrators are very important for audiobooks. For example, I tried listening to the Mortal Instruments series via audiobook, but by the last book, I had to give up. The first narrator was good and allowed me to get lost in the story, but as the series moved on the narrators got worse. It got so bad that I decided to just read the physical copy of City of Heavenly Fire instead, the narrator has just a bad monotone voice that I found myself falling asleep and being extremely bored with the story.
Now that is not the case with An Ember in the Ashes (book 1 of the series) and Torch, these narrators are so good. They each portray their roles so well and are just perfect for each character. I’m particularly obsessed with Steve West who portrays Elias. I’m so into it that I now want to listen to other books that he narrates. I get so hooked to listening that when my commute is over I find myself sitting in my car listening for a few extra minutes if I can spare them. Now that doesn’t happen for all audiobooks. It is pure magic when the right narrators are reading an interesting, action-packed story. I occasionally will jump into the physical copy and hear the narrators in my head.
So if you’re looking for a new audiobook to get into I highly recommend giving Ember and Torch and listen. When I next have audible credit available I plan on getting A Reaper at the Gates, which came out last year. With the way the story is currently going, I can’t wait to see what happens next.
